STAR-ACTION

OUR NEXT MEETING IS TUESDAY FEBRUARY 25, 2025 at 7PM in the Parish Centre

WE WOULD LOVE YOU TO JOIN US!

Major Brendan Nottle event for STAR-ACTION

Thirty one people attended a very special night hosted by the STAR-ACTION team on Tuesday November 12

We were privileged to listen to Major Brendan Nottle who spoke of the Salvation Army’s mission of service to the struggling members of our society, as well as the important role our city of Melbourne has played historically in the provision of welfare.

The Major spoke of the importance of their core values, of not leaving anyone behind, of wrapping people in concern and support, and of transforming lives.

He likened their mission to that of our Catholic faith, to uphold the values of social justice, to serve and support in the name of God, with dignity and without discrimination.

The conversation and questions following were illuminating, entertaining and informative, and our raffle winners – all present on the night – were given the extra treat of winning as well as contributing to an excellent cause!

Special thanks to the STAR-ACTION team for their organisation and commitment.

Major Brendan reminded us with his sincere and engaging presence, of the value of relationship, of respect, and of what unites us as people of faith.

During July and August we had our major event, packing ‘Bags of Love’ for the impact for women organization. Over the three dates, we had 96 volunteers from St Anthony’s and Resurrection who gave up their time for this initiative.

We also raised $360 and donated many new goods.

Members of both Resurrection and St Anthony’s parishes should be proud of these efforts.

We can feel powerless in the face of so many of life’s trials and hardships, but each and every little step, each little commitment of our time helps.

We also remember the words of Pope Francis

‘Through humble gestures and simple acts of service to the least among us, the Good News that Jesus is risen and lives among us is proclaimed.’

BRAINWAVE FOR BIKES

Brainwave Bikes is part of Brainwave Australia, which was founded in 1994 by Josephine Nichols who had a young child diagnosed with a brain tumour. Josephine saw the need to provide practical support and care to children and families who are impacted by neurological conditions and created the Brainwave charity to meet these needs.

When Paul Bird, CEO of Brainwave Australia, saw bikes left out for hard rubbish in his neighbourhood, it sparked an idea. Instead of letting these bikes go to waste at the tip,

why not repair them, sell them, and use the profits as another fundraising avenue for the charity?

From that simple idea, Brainwave Bikes social enterprise has grown to be Melbourne’s largest second-hand bike dealer.

STAR-ACTION hosted an evening on April 24th, to promote the excellent social enterprise ‘Brainwave for Bikes’. Kieran McMahon spoke with passion and enthusiasm about this venture where you can:

DONATE an old bike in any condition - stopping it from filling up landfill

BUY an affordable second hand bike, or have your bike serviced from the shop in Dingley (6/42-44 Garden Boulevard Dingley)

Or

VOLUNTEER to support the team at the bike shop or at brainwave.org.au

Thanks to those who entered our raffle. We raised $405 for Brainwave: brainwave.org.au

and collected 19 bikes in our drive!
